Euphonium Support

Welcome to the ERGObrass euphonium homepage!  The ERGObrass works perfectly for the euphonium, baritone horn, tenor horn and alto horn. It is a great auxiliary device for all players which gives t more comfortable, effective and healthy way of playing.

The general idea of ERGObrass supports is based on a simple fact that all brass instruments are heavy to hold. We all know that relaxation is very important in brass playing. However, holding the instrument in playing position inevitably produces a static tension in hands, arms, shoulders, upper body and throat.

And in addition to the better efficiency, it is also very comfortable!

The ERGObrass might seem to require a very radical change in the way an euphonium, baritone horn, tenor horn and alto horn are played and therefore it is especially important that you read and look at these pages with an open mind without any prejudice. After all the needed changes are only very slight. Leave your initial emotional reactions aside as they often prevent us from seeing things clearly when confronted with something that is very different to what we are used to. Instead, ask yourself if what we are about to show you seems sensible and logical.

We firmly believe that playing the euphonium with the help of the ERGObrass gives a player benefits that are well worth the effort of learning a few new habits. We have a money back guarantee although we are proud to admit that fewer than 2% of ERGObrass supports we send to players around the world are returned.

So, please read on to learn how it works and how you can benefit from this radical but rational invention, the ERGObrass!

Technical Details

The euphonium is certainly not a small and light instrument. Today we pay much attention to how the tools and equipment we use everyday affect our health and comfort. This is the science of ergonomics.

The euphonium, while a marvelous instrument, does pose special ergonomic challenges because of its size and weight. The bigger the horn is or the smaller the player (younger players), the more important ergonomic considerations become.

Today the euphonium is surely one of the heaviest instrumets to be played without any support. No saxophones, bassoons or cellos are held with tense hands during playing.

Nowadays even many oboist and clarinetists hold their instruments of a few hundred grams with neckstripe rather than with tense hands. Over the years if the horn is held with statically tensed hands, many players suffer various consequences.

First the hand gets tired and stiff. Later one often acquires many kinds of pains in the wrist, arm, elbow, upper arm and shoulder or in the upper back and neck. This can reduce the effectiveness and enjoyment of playing the euphonium...

But it does not have to be like this!

It is important to feel relaxed and comfortable when making music. The ERGObrass support is specially designed to be a handy medium to enable the player to keep his or her hands and upper body completely relaxed by removing the need for the body to support the weight of the instrument.

Instead, the ERGObrass support will transmit the weight of the horn to the chair or through your belt to your legs!!

Play sitting or play standing. Either way it is always comfortable because your hands and back are relaxed.

Freeing up the upper body can also help the most important aspects of brass playing: breathing and air flow. With ERGObrass support, the only task remaining for the hands is to balance the horn and keep the mouthpiece in the right place and angle for each situation, and then your fingers stay relaxed on the valve triggers. With the weight of the horn taken off the body, the player's touch and feel for playing are improved and stresses are reduced.

A plate made of stainless steel is attached near the center of gravity of the horn. The support rod has a special round head. It is put into one of the holes in the plate. You just experiment to find which one gives you the best feel of balance. The chair tube is designed to be used in sitting position. The height adjustment of the instrument is done with a quick turn of the finger screw with your right hand.

Simply open the screw, adjust the instrument in the desired height and lock up the screw. Nice and quick. The horn is now floating at the desired height on a smooth spring. Even if the height screw is locked you can easily turn your instrument in any direction at any time. This enables you to play the horn without any tension in arms, shoulder, back or throat - quite a relaxing feeling!

To play standing up, you put the support tube in a special belt pocket.

Now the weight of you hands and the instrument is transmitted through the belt to your legs!

Opinions

- I have been using the ERGObrass system in my own playing for about 3 months now. All of my previous problems with muscle fatigue and tension while holding the instrument have been eliminated. When I sit down to make music during a rehearsal, teaching session, or a recording session - I know that I can fully concentrate on making music. All of my students are now using the ERGObrass system - I am fully supportive of this product!

- I think the ERGObrass has been a tremendous help for me. I teach a lot and my arms get often tired as I am holding my euphonium so many hours every day. But with the ERGObrass I can play my big instrument without any worries! Also playing while standing is no more a problem. I have seen the same result on my students. Even adults used to "shrink" themselves around the instrument but with the ERGObrass they can breath more freely and that makes them even sound better.

- The euphonium is certainly one of most difficult brass instruments from an ergonomic point of view. I have tried many different systems to ease playing while standing. But all other harnesses and straps have impeded my playing instead of making it easier. That is why I did not trust the ERGObrass at first. However, after testing the prototype I learned that the belt support model suited my needs very well. Now I always use it while playing standing. I find at least the following advantages when using it:

- My left hand and neck stay relaxed and I do not need to support the instrument with my right hand thumb. This makes it a lot easier to use the valves.

- It enables very free movements and is very flexible, once you get accustumed to the device.

-It does not disturb breathing, the weight is on pelvis, not on midriff.

- The ERGObrass is visually non-obtrusive. It is easy to attach to the horn.

- I noticed a difference in my playing as soon as I began using the
ERGObrass while playing my euphonium. The tension level in my arms, shoulders, and back decreased considerably. I now recommend the ERGObrass to all my students. The system encourages me to have perfect posture every time I pick up the instrument. The design of the components and the quality of craftsmanship are superb. I am addicted to my ERGObrass!

-After a short adjustment period, I find that my ERGObrass has helped to remove a great deal of tension from my euphonium playing.  Long practice sessions, especially sitting, are easier and more productive.  Unlike other support devices I've tried, the spring loaded support rod in ERGObrass allows me to "move with the music" rather than tying me down to one position. That is immensely helpful. ERGObrass can be adjusted to fit players of any height comfortably and flexibly.

- It's everything I had hoped and more. I can sit erect and therefore get better breath which, in turn, produces a better sound. I can also play longer without a breath. My upper range even seems better. It doesn't get any better than that. The ability the support give you to move is great.

- In the Fall of 2005 I began using the ERGObrass support for euphonium.  Although the exertion of holding up the euphonium is not on the same order as that for the trombone, I realized a similar freedom from tension that has made playing the euphonium as relaxed as possible.  Fitting the ERGObrass to my oval-style Miraphone required some adaptation to the standard kit, which Jouko Antere helped me with.  I understand that my modification has now become a standard feature of the support kit.

- Several of my horn playing friends have begun using the ERGObrass support for that instrument and report that it helps reduce tension and aids in playing “off the knee.”

- The ERGObrass support systems have proven to be an invaluable addition to my playing experience.  I highly recommend them.

FAQ

Is it awkward?

It is quite natural that a player, who has been playing for years, will go through an experiment and adjustment period when first using the ERGObrass support. Most of players have developed some tiny little movements during playing, the player does not need them anywhere, in fact he or she does not even know about most of them. But it is only a matter of some days or weeks, and a player will get used to ERGObrass and finds a new way to make his or hers typical movements, only now ERGObrass will be supporting the weight of the instrument. Now you can discover new and healthier ways of playing. You’ll find out very soon that you can turn and lean your horn with minimal effort. In fact the only real difference is that you feel more relaxed and playing is lighter and more comfortable...

Will it fit in the horn case?

As there is only the little plate attached permanently to the horn, it shall fit easliy in most horn cases. The support rod and tube are approx. 30 cm long and easy transport.

How is the height adjusted?

It is most important that the instrument is at the right height - where you find it comfortable - when you play. You lift or descend the support rod into its counterpart. Just open the screw and set it in a desireble height. And as the horn is on a top of the spring, you can also smoothly and with a minimum force move it up and down a little bit while you play.

What does it look like?

The ERGObrass is designed to be as invisible as possible, it is simple and non-obtrusive.

Does it fit any horn?

Yes. The only requirement is that the point of fitting the attaching plate on your horn is similar to the pictures below. The installation to an oval shaped euphonium might be more difficult, their shape vary more from a brand and model to another than the modern euphonium. However, it can be usually done with some testing and using your imagination!
